Noreen Hay’s resignation from politics will trigger a byelection in the seat of Wollongong – one of three in the state this year.
Voters in Canterbury and Orange will vote on November 12 after Labor’s Labor's Linda Burney and the Nationals' Andrew Gee won federal seats in last month's election.
In the last byelection to be held in the Illawarra – in the federal seat of Cunningham in 2002 – Greens candidate Michael Organ briefly seized hold in the safe Labor area until Sharon Bird was elected in 2004.
The Liberal Party did not contest the 2002 byelection.
