The talented Illawarra artists both spent some time in Western Australia learning their craft.
Japanese-born Trestler now lives in Bellambi but spent her early Australian years in Perth, where she completed a visual arts degree at university.
Sydney-born artist Baker has called Thirroul home for almost 20 years, but he also spent time in WA.
“I've been studying art for many years and studied at Claremont College in Western Australia in 1986 and then moved to Tasmania and studied fine arts at the University of Hobart,’’ Baker said.
“About 20 years ago I settled in the Illawarra and have been working as a practicing artist since then.’’
Trestler and Baker will feature and sell their work at Life on Flinders’ (LoF) 10th annual exhibition on August 19-21. There will be 25 exhibitors with a wide variety of styles and mediums at the Life Drawing and Painting Exhibition. Well known local identity Anne-Louise Rentell will open the event on Friday at 7pm in the Old Courthouse, Wollongong Harbour.
The exhibition will run from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Trestle said she loved being a member of the not-for-profit life drawing and painting group.
“I like life drawing. It is quite challenging but very organic and beautiful,’’ she said.
“Every person and every body is different and you have to capture the model in a believable form. I also like portraits and I like capturing visual and facial expressions which highlights and supports the model's thought and personality.’’
Long-time LoF member Baker also enjoys attending group drawing sessions above Levers on Flinders Street, Wollongong every Tuesdays, in between his overseas’ surfing trips.
It was during one of these trips in 2014 that Baker had a surfing accident and broke his neck. While he was extremely lucky, he did suffer impairment and pain in his left [drawing] arm.
“I’ve had to train myself to draw with my right arm.’’
