Illawarra, South Coast, Hunter Northern NSW, Shoalhaven, La Perouse and Marrickville teams took part in the Aboriginal rugby league knockout challenge to highlight the need for more Aboriginal and non-indigenous foster carers.
The Kids in Care Cup was hosted by the Illawarra Titans Aboriginal Rugby League Football Club on the last day of Foster Care Week (September 11-17) to link in with local out-of-home-care agencies to recruit more foster carers.
Event manager Rod Broad said the 2016 showpiece was the best to date.
‘’A great effort was put into this event by all the teams involved as well as all of the volunteers who helped on the day spreading the message of the need for more foster carers across NSW,’’ Mr Broad said.
La Perouse beat South Coast team Yunimyna Warriors 36-18 in the final.
‘’We are very proud to have won this year's Kids in Care Cup,’’ La Perouse manager Jamie Ingram said.
‘’The name of the team is the La Perouse "LaPa" Bummers which is a youth centre run out of Yarra House at La Perouse. Boys who attend the centre form part of our team; we give them a chance to play men’s football.’’
