On the weekend Destination Wollongong general manager Mark Sleigh spent the day with Royal Caribbean’s Miami based Inventory, Planning and Deployment director Marc Millar who was checking on the logistics for the maiden voyage on October 30.
Mr Millar looked at the infrastructure at Port Kembla and toured local attractions included in the shore excursion schedule for sale on board the ship. He was very impressed with his first visit to Wollongong.
“In a highly competitive market, cruise lines are relying on destinations to provide unique product to increase take-up of sales for their shore excursion program. Marc was particularly interested in Nan Tien Temple, HARS and Symbio Wildlife Park, where he got up close with his first koala. We’re extremely lucky that we have such a diverse range of world class tourism products that cater to all demographics. Continuing to grow these reasons to visit, will encourage more cruise lines to engage with the South Coast as a destination,” Mr Sleigh said.
The proposed tour program;
- Wollongong & Surrounds – 4 hours – Tour of history and sights with local expert. Includes Port Kembla, Shellharbour Village & Bulli Tops.
- Symbio Wildlife Park – 5 hours – Up close animal encounters and a visit to Bald Hill and Sea Cliff Bridge.
- Australian Aviation History – 3 hours – Guided tour of Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) to see historic planes such as the 1955 Lockheed Super Constellation (Connie).
- Mindfulness and meditation – 4 hours – Visit to Nan Tien, the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere, for lunch and mindfulness meditation.
- Kiama Blow Hole, tree top walk, waterfalls and Southern Highlands – 7 hours – guided tour taking in Fitzroy Falls and a winery.
- Farm, fresh fruit and a honey bee – 5 hours – 90 minute visit to a farm/orchard and scenic tour of Sea Cliff Bridge/Bald Hill.
