Gabrielle Journey Jones, poet and CEO of Creative Womyn Down Under will play her drum at the Hideaway Cafe in Wollongong on Friday, October 7.
Creative Womyn Down Under is a community initiative which helps to connect women and creativity.
Jones is passionate about using performance poetry to raise social issues.
‘’Every poet to approach this mic centre stage, Is a word doctor, a shaman, a sage, administering spoken medicine….’’ Jones said.
The event will also feature a ukulele performance from playwright, visual artist and musician Joel Burrows.
Held once a month, the Say It Sing It live poetry and music event is coordinated by the South Coast Writers Centre (SCWC) and Wollongong City Council.
The SCWC was sad to see the monthly event come to a close, but has enjoyed the opportunity to provide public and free poetry and music to locals having a night out.
‘’It’s been fantastic to see local Wollongong residents enjoying live poetry and music in a freely accessible way, especially those who may not have gone out of their way to find events like these,’’ SCWC media and marketing coordinator Adara Enthaler said.
‘’I hope it’s inspired some people to get more involved in the performative arts in Wollongong.’’
The event runs from 6-8pm at the Hideaway Café, with featured performances and an open mic, followed by special encore performances by the winner of the night.
