The MTV Beats & Eats festival has teamed up with Skydive the Beach to offer the brave the choice of plunging 14,000 feet into the event at Stuart Park on November 26.
MTV Asia Pacific vice president Simon Bates said the idea came when organisers were sussing out North Wollongong as a venue, as each year a different NSW city hosts, when the skydivers started coming in and a “light bulb” went off.
“We went straight over to chat ... and ask is there any way we can offer that experience,” Mr Bates said.
Festival goers can book a tandem skydive for $250 (built into the ticket price on purchase) and can either jump in on the fun on the day, or use the dive within six months.
Meantime general admission tickets, for those happy just to be spectators, are far cheaper than most music festivals at the cost of a parma and pint – something Mr Bates said was the crux.
“It’s not about profit for us but about connecting with our audiences,” he said.
“It’s very deliberate for charging $30 for what is essentially a $150 music festival, there’s no difference in terms of production or the scale of what you’ll see.”
The event, which mixes top music acts with gourmet cuisine, was created with Destination NSW as a way to boost tourism and encourage people to explore other parts of the state.
This model is used by MTV all over the globe, including the world’s biggest free music festival in Malta.
Headline acts for Wollongong’s event include Steve Aoki, Throttle, Savage, Paces and Maala with more to be announced. While TV personality and DJ, Didier Cohen, will host the show.
The Illawarra-based 2 Smoking Barrels food truck will be dishing up Texan-style specialties, along with Hank’s Haute Dogs, The Cuban Place, Jimmy Likes modern Asian cuisine, Italian with Fratelli Fresh and Burgers by Josh.
Mr Bates said tickets were selling fast with “thousands” so far from outside of the Illawarra.
“It’s a really unique opportunity to see artists of that calibre in your own back yard,” he said.
MTV Beats & Eats is in its second year after Parramatta hosted the inaugural event in 2015.
Camping packages are also available with tickets, staying at Wollongong Surf Leisure Resort in Towradgi.
