RISING Dragons star Jacob Host walked into WIN Stadium in October with his eyes firmly set on a round one start and is confident he’s done everything possible to ensure that goal comes to fruition when coach Paul McGregor names his 21-man squad for the club’s season opener against Penrith on Tuesday.

The Renown United junior had been part of the Dragons’ previous two preseasons but, having made eight top grade appearances in 2016, he was determined to ensure he wasn’t merely making up the numbers.
“I definitely had a different mindset,” Host, who re-committed to the club for three more seasons in January, said.
“Last year I came into preseason just wanting to get through it and get myself in the best physical shape for footy that I possibly could.
“This year I had the goal of playing round one and cementing my spot in the side and having a great year with the Dragons so the mindset’s changed a lot in the last 12 months.
“I’m a lot more comfortable in my own ability to perform in the top grade and that I belong there than what I was 12 months ago.”
Host admitted that it’s a “relief” that another torturous preseason is behind him but he’s certain he and the playing group have done everything possible to be ready for round one.
“It’s been such a big preseason and the coaching staff have put in massive effort to make everyone the best they can be,” Host said.
“We had our last preseason session last Friday and the coaching staff made sure it was a big one. I’m confident fitness-wise that we’ve covered all the bases.”
