Calvi’s District Court jury retired at 3.10pm on Thursday to consider its verdict and returned the guilty finding just after 10am on Friday.
Prosecutors immediately applied to revoke Calvi’s bail, claiming he presented a danger to the community.
The court heard he had spent 13 months behind bars until he was granted Supreme Court bail last August.
In refusing bail, Judge Andrew Haesler noted Calvi faced the likelihood of more time behind bars for his crime, which carries a standard non-parole period of seven years.
Calvi had gone into the trial admitted that he inflicted the stabbing wound that left Mr Merxhushi picking bits of broken glass from a gaping wound in his neck.
The court heard the laceration came within a centimeter of severing his carotid artery.
However, he pleaded not guilty to the charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, claiming he did not intend to cause the life-threatening injuries, describing himself as “8 out of 10 drunk” at the time.
The jury ultimately failed to believe Calvi’s claims of innocence.
More to come.
