Shark attack won’t stop surfers at The Farm

Surfers were back in the water at The Farm on Monday morning, unfazed by a shark attack on a bodyboarder just hours earlier.

Gonzalo Mompo Fernandez, a Spanish tourist, was with a group of friends at the popular surfing spot in Killalea State Park, when he was bitten on the bottom by a shark about 6.30pm on Sunday.

The 30-year-old received small puncture wounds to his backside, but did not require medical treatment.

On Monday morning, dozens of surfers took advantage of a break in the lingering wet weather – and glimpses of sunshine – to catch a few waves.

Sunday night’s lucky escape came almost a year after Brett Connellan was mauled by a shark at nearby Bombo beach.

The then 22-year-old, from Kiama Downs, was surfing when he was attacked at the northern end of the beach about 7pm on March 30, 2016.

Connellan lost a large proportion of his left thigh, and the quad muscle was torn away right down to the bone.

He has since returned to the water.
