The amount of Australian steel used in key NSW government projects would be made public under new procurement changes.
The move, to be announced by parliamentary secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward on Monday, would deliver greater transparency in government contracting.
The figures would be made publicly available via an online “dashboard”, which is set to go live later this year. It would be managed by NSW Procurement.
Among other changes, the government plans to review the application of a “broader economic benefit” test on Australian versus imported steel suppliers, and investigate protections for fabricators that air concerns over steel quality.
Mr Ward said the reforms were “the solution the industry called for” and thanked stakeholders, including Illawarra steel fabricators, for their input. The MP said he’d also “had many a conversation” with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian “about the need to support our steel industry”.
