Police have charged Croom brothers Marko and Vaso Bubanja with affray following a horrific assault at the Towradgi Beach Hotel on Sunday night in which a patron had his ear sliced clean off.
Wollongong police Detective Inspector Brad Ainsworth confirmed investigating officers laid charges against two men on Thursday.
The brothers were at Wollongong courthouse on Thursday morning for mention of an apprehended violence order stemming from the Sunday night incident when police arrested them.
The pair was escorted to nearby Wollongong Police Station and each charged with a single count of affray.
They were granted police bail and returned to the courthouse, where their lawyer, Darren Chennell, sought adjournments for the AVO matters to May 23 – the same day the charges will first come before the court.
Mr Chennell told the court his clients intended to plead not guilty.
Under an interim AVOs put in place on Thursday, both men have been banned from having any contact with their alleged victim and ordered to surrender any firearms or gun licences.
Meantime, Det Insp Ainsworth told the Mercury the incident occurred around 10.30pm inside Waves Nightclub during the EVROPA Superclub, a ticketed dance party celebrating Balkan culture and music.
Det Insp Ainsworth said an altercation resulted in a 24-year-old man being attacked by a group of men, which allegedly included the Bubanja brothers.
“The victim’s ear was sliced off in the incident,” Det Insp Ainsworth said.
It is understood the ear was later picked up off the ground and transported to Wollongong Hospital alongside its one-time host in the hope it could be reattached in surgery, however Det Insp Ainsworth said early indications were the ear would be unable to be reattached.
He said police were keen to speak to witnesses or anyone who may have more information about what occurred.

Det Insp Ainsworth said it was possible a third person would be charged on Friday over the incident.
