Kile David Wiggins, 29, fronted Wollongong Local Court on Monday charged with seven offences related to the incident, described by police as “alarming”.
Police allege Wiggins went to a home on Meadow Street in Balgownie about 7am on Sunday and threw a small incendiary device – described in police documents as a “Molotov cocktail” – onto the driveway.
According to police, Wiggins filled a small container with fuel, placed material in the opening and lit it.
Another person in the street witnessed the incident, police said, and Wiggins allegedly yelled to them: “It’s gunna blow, so get away from there”.
The witness was not injured.
Wiggins then allegedly pulled a .22 rifle from his car, a red Holden Commodore, and fired one shot into the air before fleeing the scene.
Police were called and arrived a short time later to find the Molotov cocktail still alight on the driveway.
About 7.30am, officers found the Commodore on Florence Street, Fairy Meadow, where it had crashed into a fence bordering the playground of a childcare centre.
The police documents stated the car became wedged in between fence posts, but Wiggins was able to free himself and flee along an adjacent creek.
A sawn-off rifle and ammunition were located in the vehicle and seized.
Police allege Wiggins drove his car dangerously, including along a bike path.
Following inquiries, Wiggins was arrested on Rann Street, Fairy Meadow, about 12.25pm.
He was charged with firing a firearm in a public place; firing a firearm in a manner likely to injure a person; possessing an unregistered firearm; using an unregistered firearm; possession of a loaded firearm in a public place; intimidation; and driving in a dangerous manner.
In court on Monday, defence lawyer John Gallagher cited health concerns as he applied to have Wiggins released from custody.
Police prosecutor Acting Sergeant Rachel Biffin opposed the bail application, saying the charges were “very serious” and the facts of the case were “alarming”.
Magistrate Michael Stoddart refused to release Wiggins on bail, citing the “very serious allegations” against him.
The matter returns to court on May 31.
