However, unlike the misunderstood “centre for ants” in the classic comedy, the homemade insect hotels will help to encourage biodiversity in suburban gardens.
“Insects love the hotels because they provide shelter in winter and nesting space in summer,” councillor John Dorahy said.
“The hotels play a very important role in providing protection to insects that pollinate plants, including home garden fruit and veggie crops.”
Other activities, which will take place from 1pm on Sunday, include behind-the-scenes tours and a free screening of Before the Flood from sunset.
John Gabriele, from ABC radio’s The Compost Heap, will drop in to join visitors for a 1.30pm tour and then share his wisdom at the “official opening” of the Garden’s new insect hotels at 3pm.
See the garden’s website for full details of the program.
