Emergency services were called to Jones Beach about 1.30am Saturday, following reports a 51-year-old rock fisherman was hit by a wave and washed into the ocean at the northern end of the beach.
The man’s friend raised the alarm with residents. He was wearing a life jacket and was equipped with a torch when he went into the water.
A crew aboard the Kiama Surf Rescue jet boat responded about 1.45am and spotted the man 150 metres off the northern point.
He was rescued in rough conditions and treated by the boat’s crew and paramedics.
He was airlifted to St George Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition, suffering head injuries.
In the wake of the rescue, police are calling on rock anglers to spend time observing their intended fishing spot, to get an understand of the conditions over a full swell/wave cycle.
Rock fishers should never fish alone, without a life jacket, or in exposed areas during rough or large seas.
