It might not have been obvious to the average person, but there was a little more red than usual inside the Wollongong blood donor centre on Tuesday afternoon.

A handful of Illawarra Young Labor members rolled up their sleeves to donate blood ahead of World Donor Day on Wednesday.
Caitlin Roodenrys’ reason for donating was personal – her good friend, Jess Sparks, had a lifesaving double lung transplant in August.
“I know that she needed it [blood] last time she was in hospital; she needed eight blood transfusions just to keep her going,” Caitlin said.
“For me, it's a very personal thing of being able to come in and donate, and know that while it might not be my blood that’s helping my friend, it’s someone's and I’m helping someone else.”
