A spokeswoman for the airport said the pilot was “undertaking training” using runway 34 when it landed heavily and crashed on runway 16 threshold (at the northern end of the airport) just after 10am.
She said a member of the public witnessed the accident and called emergencey services.
A police spokeman said the pilot, a man in his 30s, walked away from the wreck though paramedics transported him to Wollongong Hospital with back pain.
“The aircraft suffered substantial damage to its tail spar propellar and rotar,” the airport spokeswoman said.
“The aircraft was removed soon after and airport operations returned to normal.”
Meanwhile just hours later emergency services responded to another aircraft accident, a hang-glider down at Bald Hill.
