The Everest is still close to four months away, but excitement for the world’s richest horse race is already starting to build for Gwynneville resident Michael Tobin.
Tobin is a part-owner of boom filly She Will Reign, which will take one of 12 slots in the inaugural $10 million feature race held at Royal Randwick on October 14.
The 2016 Golden Slipper winner has recently returned to work with Group 1 winning trainer Gary Portelli as the stable begins to ramp up her preparation for the multi million dollar weight-for-age 1200m event.
“The excitement is starting to build again,” Tobin, who has a 5% share, said.
“She’s back in training. She came back not last Friday but the Friday before and has come back beautifully.
“She’s muscled up through the shoulder and widened at the hip.
“She looks like a really mature horse now.”
Portelli confirmed earlier this month that She Will Reign had been poised for a first-up run in the AJ Moir Stakes (1000m) to start her preparation for The Everest.
But with Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club expected to make changes to the spring carnival schedule in NSW, Portelli could have the option of kicking off this preparation closer to home.
She Will Reign burst onto the scene with a 8-¼ length demolition of rivals on debut at Kembla Grange last December. She went on to claim the Silver Slipper before taking out the Golden Slipper against some of the best Australian sprinters of her generation. In The Everest, She Will Reign will take the next step as she will likely face some of the best sprinters from around Australian and the world.
“We know what is likely to come in Australia, it will be interesting to see what comes from overseas,” Tobin said.
Currently, She Will Reign is on the second line of betting at $8 for The Everest behind champion sprinter Chautauqua ($4.60 fav).
