Club manager Taylah O’Brien said the event was being held in Anytime Fitness centres across Australia and at Midday on Wednesday 98 people had registered to do 15 minutes on a treadmill for a $15 donation.
Ms O’Brien said two treadmills were operating from 6pm Friday to 6pm Saturday. There are still some spots available at Shellharbour. And there is a national link for anyone who would like to find their closest participating Anytime Fitness Club. People can also register at the Shellharbour club’s Facebook page.
Ms O’Brien said she and club owners Fiona Magrow and Janelle Bostock were excited by the number of people willing to step up and run to prevent suicide.
“We can book in members and non members and members of their family. We also have a fundraising page where people can just donate money. We have sponsors of the treadmills as well. The Stingrays our local football team that we actually sponsor have a treadmill that is all green and gold.”
Some businesses have sponsored the other treadmill being used and there are prizes for best dressed on a treadmill during the challenge, a distance for time champion and the best treadmill face selfie.
The event is being held under an umbrella foundation for Suicide Prevention Australia and hopes to raise $500,000.
Anytime Fitness Shellharbour regularly supports the community.
A few weeks ago it was involved in a charity boot camp at Calderwood and supported Angels at Work annual fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation.
