St Vincent de Paul Society NSW will be joining with other charities to participate in the sixth annual National Op Shop Week (August 27 to September 2).
The week will be a celebration of vintage fashion, op shop bargains, supporting charity and the environmental benefits of reducing, reusing and recycling.
Emily Henderson, centre supervisor at Vinnies’ Fairy Meadow store said they were running a ten per cent off sale from Sunday to Saturday.
Tarrawanna’s Izzy Cauduro, who is in her 50s, volunteers at the Fairy Meadow store two days a week. “I like being on the floor because I get to talk to people,” she said. “You get all sorts of people coming in, and sometimes they just want to come in and have a chat.”
She said the demographics of customers varied greatly.
“You get some people who are really battling. You get university students, single mothers, to like high-rollers. I actually shop here myself and at other op shops as well. I think they’re great, because you never know what you’re going to find, and you get bargains.”
St Vincent de Paul Society NSW president Denis Walsh said NSW sales from their shops equated to approximately 40 per cent of their revenue.
Wollongong area manager Glen Carter said funds raised would go towards their Good Works programs.
“I think the shopper today is more aware of the value of the dollar,” he said.
“I think what we provide is a good alternative for a wide range of people to come and shop.”
