What was clear to all present was how much bigger the new TK Maxx is than the former Rebel Sports Store on the same site.
And the length of a walkway to the new David Jones food court and store and link around to Globe Lane behind the new TK Maxx store.
Fighting the noise of excited shoppers and a jazz band Mr Keenan confirmed to the Illawarra Mercury that the new look world class David Jones and all the other new specialty stores will open on October 5.
“We are going to announce the other brands on Tuesday,” he said.
“Construction is on track and we are looking forward to a grand opening on the 5th of October..just before the Christmas rush which is fantastic. All the new stores are starting their fit-outs now. And a lot of the existing retailers here are having a refresh as well. With David Jones we are starting to see more of what they are planning for their food market here. I think that is going to be a real point of difference for the Illawarra.”
Mr Keenan said Thursday’s opening of an international brand was an exciting first reveal for the newly upgraded shopping centre.
“The great thing about TK Maxx is you have new brands coming through all the time at fantastic prices. And some luxury items.”
But today TK Maxx is a fantastic brand and we are really excited to have them as part of the centre here.
Debbie Shaw, of Shellharbour, said she had shopped at the Warrawong store before and her daughter shopped at TK Maxx in London when she lived there and loved it.
“It is very exciting to have one in the new-look Wollongong Central,” she said.
“I think this will really appeal to the young people of Wollongong.”
Natasha Marshall, of Wollongong, moved to Australia from the United Kingdom two years ago and said she loved shopping at their international retail chain’s stores over there.
She said the Wollongong Central shop was just as good as any TK Maxx she had visited in Europe where the company has more than 200 stores.
“This is wonderful,” she said.
“In the UK they are everywhere.”
