John Thompson will target the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes with Thy Kingdom Come following his talented colt’s slashing win at Kembla Grange on Saturday.

The trainer dropped his high-quality three-year-old back to provincial grade and the son of Lope De Vega smashed his rivals to win the Gary Portelli Maiden Plate (1600m) by six lengths.
Thompson trained the quinella, with Pellegrina running on well for second but she was no match for the winner.
Thompson was setting his sights high after the win.
“He is nominated for the Spring Champion and I think he will go better over a bit further too,” he said.
“We will probably go to the Gloaming Stakes next start.”
Thy Kingdom Come has already been tested in black type races.
That class showed when he demolished his rivals on the weekend.
Apprentice Blaike McDougall gave the odds on favourite a perfect ride to ensure he saluted.
After settling midfield on the fence, he weaved a passage between runners before surging past his rivals in the straight.
“He has always shown us at home that he could do that,” Thompson said.
“He has been ridden in the deep end all of his career.
“He was ridden upside down first up at Rosehill so we just thought we would bring him to a maiden and get him a bit of confidence.
“It’s good for the kid too. He rides him every morning. He knows him well and deserved to get a win on him.”
Earlier in the day, Jeff Penza rode Sacher Torte to victory.
