The charity game of rugby league being played this Sunday afternoon at Collegians Sport Centre at Figtree will involve two teams of Police taking the field.
The teams are made up of officers from Wollongong Local Area Command and Lake Illawarra Area Command.
And while competition will be strong to see which local area command will come out victorious on the day.
All the officers taking the field are doing it to help the families in the Illawarra region supported by NSW Police Legacy.
Sgt Bob Minns said this weekend would be the fifth annual Graeme Donnelly Cup between the Lake Illawarra Lions and Wollongong Falcons.
And that would not have been possible without the help of so many supporters and sponsors over so many years.
Sgt Minns said close to $50,000 had been raised in the previous years and the competition was evenly poised with each local area command winning two games each to date.
He said the event would not have been the success it was the first four years without so many people in the community, businesses and police officers getting involved.
"The money raised has gone to support our local police widows, retired police in need, police who had their homes burnt down in the recent Blue Mountains fires and police families impacted by cancer,” Sgt Minns said.
"And we have helped PCYC run a number of youth programs which have been a privilege to be involved in as well.”
Sgt Minns said the goal for this weekend’s fifth annual Graeme Donnelly Memorial Cup game was $10,000 and any member of the community was invited to come along for some or all of the action.
Gates will open at 10am for the PCYC rugby league games leading into a Corrective Services game of rugby league at 12 noon, followed by a tug-of-war and touch football game.
Then a 2pm the Falcons and the Lions take the field for the honour of holding the Graeme Donnelly Cup up high and earning bragging rights for a whole year.
Officers remembered on the day will include Sgt Bernie Doyle, Senior Constable Steve Tier and Senior Constable Pat Carney.
Entry is a gold coin donation and other fundraising activities will be held on the day with all proceeds going to NSW Police Legacy and PCYC.
