The NBL came down hard on incidents arising from a third quarter melee with Demitrius Conger facing a one-game suspension after being hit with three separate charges.
Rotnei Clarke and Delvon Johnson were also sanctioned for their role in the skirmish that came after Hawks forward Nick Kay was floored by what was ruled an unsportsmanlike foul from Bullets guard Adam Gibson.
Clarke and Johnson were both also hit with unsportsmanlike fouls after rushing to the scene in defence of Kay and are facing $500 fines that can be reduced to $375 with an early guilty plea.
The Hawks have a bigger headache in Conger’s case, with the early-season standout facing a high grade “intentional contact with the face” charge and a separate high grade “careless” charge for two incidents involving Brisbane big man Tom Jervis.
Like Clarke and Johnson, he was also sanctioned for involving himself in the melee, leaving him facing a one-game suspension or a $2000 hit to hip pocket should he plead guilty to the charges.
The Hawks have until 5pm Wednesday to respond to the charges but, with their season at 1-3, it’s unlikely they will risk being without Conger for Thursday’s tough road clash with Perth. Any hearing would take place on Thursday just hours before the tip-off at Perth Arena.
Jervis and Gibson were also cited and can reduce their fine from $500 to $375 with an early guilty plea.
The Hawks-Bullets match wasn’t the only round three fixture to attract scrutiny, with charges also laid after a similar incident in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s clash between Perth and Cairns.
Taipans import Michael Carrerra is facing a two-game ban, that can be reduced to one with an early guilty plea, for his role in the fracas while Wildcats import JP Tokoto is facing $1250 in fines.
Former Hawk Jarrad Weeks and Snakes centre Nnanna Egwu were also slapped with $500 fines, that can also be reduced with early pleas, bringing the total number of charges laid from the weekend to 13.
