About 20 swimmers were ordered out of the water at Kendalls beach about 9.20am Saturday after crew aboard a helicopter spotted the shark from the air.
The shark, of unidentified species, measured 2.5 metres long and was pursuing a bait ball, said Kiama council’s head lifeguard, Andy Mole.
The beach remained closed, along with neighbouring Surf Beach, Mr Mole said.
“A search of the bait ball, with the council jetski, is currently underway,” he said, at 11.30am.

“The volunteer lifesavers have also launched their IRB (inflatable rescue boat) from surf beach.”
“We’re following normal protocall.”
The shark was spotted by NSW Department of Primary Industries chopper crew, which confirmed the sighting with a second passover.
The sightings come on what is expected to be a busy weekend at the region’s beaches. Temperatures are tipped to peak on Sunday.
For the Illawarra district, the Bureau of Meteorology says daytime temperatures will peak between 34 and 40 degrees.
“Just make sure everyone stays between the flags,” Mr Mole said.
“Not doing that is more dangerous than sharks.”
