First out of the blocks at the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony at Wollongong Town Hall were Andrei and Cherry Acacio.
The married couple from the Philippines have called Wollongong home for more than six years but it was only after their son Joseph was born in the city 14 months ago that the duo decided to become Australian citizens.
‘’It’s the best decision we’ve ever made,’’ Mr Acacio said.
‘’I think we are both in agreement that Australia is one of the best countries in the world. And we just absolutely love everything about Wollongong, from the beautiful beaches and escarpment to the friendly people.
‘’We are going to be here for the rest of our lives I think.’’
Australia Day Committee chair Robyn Te Velde spoke at the citizenship ceremony, which also included an inspirational speech from Amy Duggan, Wollongong’s Australia Day Ambassador.
The Wollongong Harmony Chorus and singer Charlotte Rhiane performed.
