Alfredo Pengue, 54, was found unconscious by guards on Friday afternoon following reports he had been bashed by another inmate.
He was taken to Westmead Hospital where he later died and a joint investigation by Corrective Services and NSW Police is underway.
Mr Pengue's family issued a statement on Sunday through their lawyer, Diane Elston, saying they were devastated by the loss of their son and brother.
He had only been in remand custody since the date of his arrest on January 1, they said.
"His family await answers as to how his death occurred and why better security measures were not in place at Silverwater MRRC (Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre)," the statement said.
"His family ask for their privacy to be respected during this terribly sad time."
