He told the Illawarra Mercury the objected was thought to have been made to look like a bomb though was deemed not to be explosive.
4:26pm:
A NSW Police Media spokesman confirmed specialist resources were currently on scene at Mount Keira to survey the “suspicious object”, however there were no further details at this time.
The public are still advised to avoid the area.
3:26pm: A police operation is unfolding at a walking track at Mount Keira, with the public advised to steer clear of the area.
Emergency services were called just after 2pm Sunday after a a “suspicious object” was discovered near Robertson’s Lookout.
“A bushwalker located a suspicious object in bushland below the lookout. So police are now on scene and have secured the area and evacuated the lookout,” Wollongong Police District duty officer Inspector Mark Walker said.
Inspector Walker said specialist resources were being called to inspect the item. He urged people to stay away from the area.
NSW Ambulance plus Fire and Rescue NSW have also been alerted as standard protocol.
It’s understood no-one has been hurt.
