With top level cricket being played in our city already currently, international level women’s tennis will be returning to Wollongong.
Wollongong will play host to a critical Fed Cup clash between the Netherlands and Australia on a court especially constructed at WIN Entertainment Centre on April 21-22.
It will be the first time since 2003 Fed Cup has been played in Wollongong.
Pictured is a young Alicia Molik after her starring role in the 2003 clash against Colombia.
Molik will return to Wollongong, this time as the captain of an Australian team hopeful of securing a vital win and returning to the world’s top eight nations for Fed Cup.
Molik flagged the side’s willingness to search for a hardcourt venue when speaking to Fairfax Media recently.
"We'd like to play on hard court for the next tie, venue we don't know, we're working through that and what's available at the time. It doesn't matter too much where it is but hopefully somewhere warm," Molik said. Well, welcome back to warm Wollongong Alicia.
The side recently beat the Ukraine in Canberra and it is believe Tennis Australia and Destination NSW hand-picked Wollongong as the venue no the back of the enormous support the region has given major events such as the Wigan Warriors and Hull FC super league game.
Australian women’s tennis is on an absolute high at the moment with three players inside the world’s top 50 in the rankings.
Ashleigh Barty is ranked 21 in the world, Daria Gavrilova 26 and Samantha Stosur returning to form and at 46. Also in the doubles Casey Dellacqua is ranked at No. 10 in the world and Barty at 12.
Together they make a lethal combination and won the final tie in Australia’s win over the Ukraine in Canberra in February to secure a berth to the next round.
It is expected tickets will go on sale for the clash on Friday, March 23, and sports fans from right across the region will undoubtedly leap at the chance to see tennis of this quality in our city.
Wollongong’s WIN Stadium has earned a reputation as one of the loudest venues in the National Basketball League and we reckon our passionate sports fans can match that when backing the green and gold in April.
