But that's exactly what happened just after midnight yesterday as Ms Sloss's niece, Ellen Leighton, was dashing to Wollongong Hospital in labour.
The Kiama mum and her partner Jake Bush had stopped quickly at Ms Sloss's house to drop off their sleepy three-year-old daughter Alliera, but as they arrived Ms Leighton realised her baby boy, Jaxon, was coming.
"I was banging on the window yelling to my aunty and she just opened the door in time to catch him as he literally popped out," Ms Leighton said.
Ms Sloss said she was happy but shocked to have delivered her great-nephew.
"I guess [I] got a little bit more than I bargained for," she said.
"They'd parked out the front and Ellen said 'he's coming, he's coming' and Jake was just saying 'hang on he's not coming yet'. . . but then Ellen was moving across the front of the car and I opened the door and just bailed in and put my hands out."
"I'd said I wanted to have a cuddle, but I didn't quite realise I'd get the first one."
With paramedics giving directions over the phone, Mr Bush and Ms Sloss helped make mum and baby comfortable until an ambulance arrived.
Things were calmer at Wollongong hospital yesterday afternoon as the young family doted over their 3.6 kilogram bundle and recovered.
"Jaxon has been really good so far, just sleeping, and I'm feeling pretty good too," Ms Leighton said.
"I'm still shocked - I've been in pre-labour for three weeks, so at first I thought this was another false alarm. But I'm glad I didn't wait any longer or we would have still been driving when he was born."
