Batemans Bay coach Steve Elliott almost came to blows with Tigers reserve grade player Aaron Brieley after first grade were forced to forfeit Saturday's Group Seven clash with Berry-Shoalhaven Heads. The Tigers have struggled all year for numbers in the top grade and are entrenched at the bottom of the ladder with no wins after eight rounds. The situation came to a head on Saturday morning when four players withdrew because of illness, leaving Elliott with only nine players.Reserve grade got underway on time, but Elliott's repeated requests to players to leave the field and keep themselves fresh for first grade were ignored.A group of first graders turned on their clubmates after the full-time siren, questioning their loyalty and commitment to the club.Brieley - a former Group Seven representative player - and other reserve graders exchanged profanity-laced insults with the first grade players before Elliott intervened. He had a heated discussion with Brieley before walking away to inform officials he had no choice but to forfeit the match."Reserve grade had 19 blokes and first grade had nine, but they wouldn't come up to help us out," Elliott said yesterday."I tried to get them to come off the field and they wouldn't come. There was a few words among some of the boys after the game and then I went and apologised to (Magpies captain-coach) Trent Burns and told him we were forfeiting."The Tigers reserve grade side are now in danger of losing their points because of first grade's forfeit.Batemans Bay committee members are believed to be furious with what transpired and will meet this week to discuss their options.Elliott said threatening to "pull second grade out" might be the best solution to make players commit to first grade."Hopefully the forfeit was a one-off. It's embarrassing for the club and it's unfair to the blokes who want to play first grade," he said."It'll probably take a few days for everyone to calm down and get everybody back keen."Elliott said his relationship with Brieley had not soured beyond repair."We'll sort it out. I get on well with Aaron and it was just one of those heat-of-the-moment things," he said."What happened was really disappointing and hopefully it makes everyone pull their fingers out and makes guys realise they have to be committed to the club and make themselves available for first grade."Meanwhile, Kiama thrashed a 12-man Gerringong 42-10 at Michael Cronin Oval on Saturday.Lions prop Matt Hingle was controversially sent off in the 15th minute for repeated infringements, allowing the Knights to skip to a 22-6 half-time lead. The match was effectively over when the visitors stretched the margin to 28-6 in the opening minutes of the second half.
