A signpost bungle left motorists baffled yesterday as Wollongong's parking meter roll-out hit a glitch.Because of a mistake by Wollongong City Council contractors last weekend, incorrect signs were installed on some streets and other streets missed completely, causing confusion among people already struggling with the new pay-and-display scheme. As a result of the blunder, signs instructed motorists they were in a two-hour parking zone, even though parking meters only dispensed one-hour tickets. It is believed the problem occurred on parts of Keira, Market and Regent streets and Railway Pde.The Mercury received several calls from residents perplexed by the error yesterday, including Dapto's Cheryl Matthews. "I parked on Keira St and the sign said two hours, but I went to the meter and it said one-hour parking," Ms Matthews said."I thought 'what the hell is going on?' It's very confusing."If I got a ticket I would have been spitting chips."The council's property and recreation manager Peter Coyte admitted the sign roll-out had encountered a few "anomalies" which would soon be rectified. The error occurred over the weekend when contractors installed between 300-400 new parking signs.Rangers were not issuing time-limit fines this week as part of the transition period, Mr Coyte said. The council's general manager David Farmer conceded some elements of the parking scheme could be modified, although he would not elaborate on whether that would involve fees or time limits."The system is extremely flexible," Mr Farmer said."We are able to assess what is happening after a few months and see how it is going."I would be surprised if we don't make some changes."Meantime, teething problems also led to the incorrect removal of free five-minute parking spots outside the Illawarra Leagues Club in Church St overnight.A council spokeswoman said the signs would be accurate by the end of the week.
