Man dies in surf at Port Kembla

A man died in the surf late last night off Port Kembla.Police and ambulance crews were called to the eastern corner of the sewage treatment works near the base of Hill 60 at about 8.40pm in response to a call of a person in the water.Two police divers entered the water in a bid to rescue the individual, described only as a male aged about 40 years old. A helicopter rescue unit was called in to help locate and retrieve the man, who was about 50m out to sea and waving a torch.Late last night, police officers were still at the scene. The helicopter had been able to locate both police divers and the patient. At about 9.30pm the man's death was confirmed.
