Kiama residents keen to hook up to the National Broadband Network can try before they buy after the fibre network was switched on at the town's library yesterday morning. The new "digital hub" allows visitors to experience the network while preliminary work continues for the launch of services to homes in Kiama and Jamberoo towards the end of this year."[The library] could certainly handle a lot more simultaneous users now, whereas before we were definitely restricted with our ADSL," Kiama council's John Holland said. "Before, even with a dozen users, you could start to notice a slowness in performance."Library visitors can access the network via wireless connections or at a library computer, with download speeds approaching 100 megabits per second."It's significant that it's here in the public library because the history of public libraries and the role of local government is to provide free information and public education," Kiama Mayor Sandra McCarthy said. From this week, the council and the Kiama Community College, which is located downstairs in the library building, will also begin hosting free computer and online training courses.Kiama has been awarded more than $1 million in federal funding to develop innovative online services and boost digital literacy among residents and businesses.Kiama resident Jean Kells, 92, is one who is proving it's never too late to learn about computers. She plans to make the most of the community college courses and NBN connection."I was interested before, but I find now I need to [learn] because I'm too old-fashioned if I'm not," she said. Kiama council will host an NBN Futures Expo for residents and businesses at The Pavilion on March 27 and 28.
