The $30million Illawarra Region Innovation and Investment Fund was the centrepiece of the government response after the Illawarra was rocked by BlueScope’s Steel decision in August last year to axe 800 Port Kembla jobs.
High-profile projects including a biodiesel fuel terminal at Port Kembla, an IT services hub at Coniston and a private mental health facility in Wollongong will all receive funding under the second and final grants round announced yesterday.
The successful businesses will match the government support on at least a dollar-for-dollar basis, with the total spend in the region from yesterday’s grants reaching $48.9million.
With the first round projects revealed in April, the rescue package promises to support 888 jobs and trigger a spend of about $92 million before June30, 2014.
Federal Industry and Innovation Minister Greg Combet said the money would act as ‘‘an enormous stimulus’’ in sectors including manufacturing, information services, healthcare and tourism.
The fund includes $20million from the federal government, plus $5million each from the NSW government and Bluescope.
The biggest grant awarded yesterday, $2.85 million, went to National Biodiesel to build a fuel storage terminal, laboratory and administration building at Port Kembla, creating 52 jobs in the next seven months as part of a larger project.
Global IT services company CSC Australia was awarded $2.76 million to create a ‘‘centre for excellence’’ for cloud computing and a cyber security operations centre that will support 98 new jobs at its Coniston Technology Park campus.
CSC Head of NSW Government Richard Wanden said the funding made the Illawarra the most attractive place for the company to invest in two growing areas of its business.
‘‘Also, I think it will be very attractive for people who are currently commuting to Sydney to consider the option of working for a multi-national in the Illawarra,’’ he said.
Throsby MP Stephen Jones said he was excited about the biodiesel project.
‘‘This is this is currently a $17billion market in Australia and it’s going to grow and to have Port Kembla a key production hub in biodiesel production here in Australia is exciting,’’ he said.
Last week, the Mercury reported the first round of funding had so far delivered 66 jobs.
Mr Jones said it was ‘‘not that surprising’’ that some jobs were created in the construction or start-up phase and others later.
‘‘If we wanted to create a fund that employed people to dig holes and fill them in again, we could have had all of that done from day one, but what we’re after is attracting new businesses and a sustainable investment,’’ he said.
