Bulli residents evacuated from their homes because of flooding fears have been given the all clear to return home. The State Emergency Service said at 6pm that the red alert had ended for people living in parts of Bulli downstream of the Bulli Upper Rail Basin. The Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled the severe weather warning for the Illawarra.

  • 130 Bulli homes to be evacuated Today’s weather warning had sparked fears for the structural integrity of an embankment at the Old Bulli Mine, prompting the SES to issue the evacuation order for 120 properties.Engineers were concerned that if the embankment was put under too much pressure, it could fail, causing flooding downstream.

However, this does not preclude the same scenario from playing out again until this structure is removed,’’ a spokesman said tonight. The SES said it would work closely with Wollongong City Council and Brookfield Multiplex, which owns the site, to ensure the removal of the structure as soon as possible. The BoM and the SES will continue to monitor the weather. Further information can be accessed through the SES website.
