David Campbell quits after gay sex claims

21 May, 2010 09:23 AM
Keira MP David Campbell came home to Woonona to face his family last night, just hours after resigning from his ministerial portfolios over gay sex allegations.

Mr Campbell was driven to the door of his two-storey townhouse about 7.40pm.

He faced a media scrum waiting outside and his gathered family inside.

  • VOTE: Should the disgraced state MP now resign from his seat of Keira?

Stony-face d, he climbed the stairs and closed the door behind him, refusing to answer a barrage of questions.

Mr Campbell tendered his resignation to Premier Kristina Keneally yesterday afternoon. She accepted it immediately.

Last night the Seven Network aired footage of Mr Campbell leaving a Sydney gay club, Ken’s of Kensington.

In a statement late yesterday, Mr Campbell said he had resigned ‘‘for personal reasons ... I apologise to my wife, family, colleagues, staff and the community for letting them down,’’ he said.

Can't stand the guy. He was the 'minister for excuses' when he was supposed to represent the Illawarra. He is part of the powerful Right and will do and say whatever he's told to do & say, the same as the rest of our local state reps. However, his sexual preferences are none of our business. Would he have stood down if he had been caught visiting a brothel or sex club that catered to heterosexuals? Prostitution has all sorts of terrible consequences and that is another debate. This 'gay sex club' may only involve willing participants and not paid sex acts. In that case, I don't think he should have resigned. I think he has set back the gay rights campaign in doing so.

I think it is time for Australia to move with the times. Here in New Zealand we had the world's first transvestite MP and we currently have at least one openly gay MP living in a same sex relationship. I really feel for David Campbell and his family, the media should leave them alone to sort out their problems in private. I am a proud Australian but wonder if it is because of public bigotry which is often a cause of people hiding a problem.

Right in the middle of the "I love Wollongong" campaign. How funny. Just another thing to add to the list.

His party are horrific, and his own performance as a Member, and Minister is pretty ordinary, but regardless, this is a personal issue, and ohhhh his poor, poor family. Good luck pulling your life back together Mr Campbell, I do honestly wish you all the best in that regard.

David Campbell may have many achievements to be rightly proud of over his long career. But his failure, as Minister for the Illawarra, to provide any real civic leadership during the WCC corruption scandal is the main reason he should now resign from Parliament. It is time we had some new faces - non NSW ALP faces - to represent our area. We need a fresh approach.

Look I really don't care what anyone's sexual preference is, but this has to be the last straw. We've got MP's that dance in their underwear, smile ridiculously at the opening of an envelope and now this! I'd rather be governed by a dozen Goldfish, at least they'd be cheap to maintain and we'd no doubt get better representation!

Just another thought. His behaviour has placed him in a position of becoming a possible victim to blackmail. Think of the ramifications.

I have never liked the man as a mayor or an MP so I am not sad to see the end of him. But isn't about time people started to come out of the closet about their sexual preferences so indicents like this don't keep distroying families and careers.

I agree completely with "no-faith" s spot-on (and funny) comments ! I think most of us feel great sympathy for David Campbell's family. But seriously, how can he expect to remain on as our MP now?

I've got no problem with anyone being gay, in fact I support the idea of gay marriage. I've got more of a problem with an elected official committing adultery, visiting sex clubs, using government cars to get there and doing all that while this electorate languishes with no infrastructure, crumbling hospitals, road problems, etc.. He has already resigned from his portfolio. If he does not resign as Keira MP he is treating us with contempt. The people in his electorate deserve better representation. Bring on the by-election.
