On the ground floor off the lounge area of the Illawarra Retirement Trust complex, the So Ho Hair and Beauty salon enjoys a high level of luxury.
The tranquil surrounds include a private walk-out courtyard where So Ho clients can lap up the sunshine and the glittering water feature that drifts past the salon's glass feature wall.
The salon department is managed by Catia Jones, who I am proud to say was one of my most highly skilled apprentices back in the late '70s.
She has clocked up 30 years as one of Wollongong's leading hairdressers and together, the So Ho team have created an elegant salon atmosphere.
Catia is a cut and colour specialist, but she caters to all age groups.
"I still enjoy the art of perming and we enjoy the challenge of pleasing clients from the very young through to the elderly. We also specialise in styling for school formals, wedding parties and special occasions."
Our beautiful model today is none other than Jess Pinkerton, who was recently one of the top 10 finalists in the Miss World Australia contest and is one of our young ambassadors for Highlights for Hope.
Catia highlighted a few medium-fine weaves through the front of Jess's hair and then applied a toner for a subtle effect from the Cairol Professional's extensive colour range.
We then twisted our way through this delicate and petite formal upsweep for Jess, as a trial for some forthcoming events she has on her calendar.
Finally a diamante double-ended clip was placed to enhance the formality of the style.
Also an expert make-up artist, Catia then applied Jess's make-up for the So Ho photo.
The enthusiasm and support for the Highlights for Hope campaign for Light and Hope Clubhouse from all the girls was heartening.
"My own family has been affected by mental health," Catia said. "It has always been difficult to discuss with others and I can't believe how Highlights for Hope has provided a forum for free discussion on mental health issues.
"So many of our clients are now chatting openly about mental health and how it has affected them or someone close to them."
