Member for Cunningham Sharon Bird and Throsby MP Stephen Jones joined opposition industry spokesman Senator Kim Carr in Canberra on Wednesday for a briefing from an Illawarra delegation fighting to #saveoursteelworks.
Ms Bird and Mr Jones are pushing for an ALP Steel Industry Plan, which they say would "clearly spell out" Labor's proposals for the industry and the region before the next federal election.
"All the proposals being put by the unions and business are being carefully considered ahead of any policy announcements," the Labor MPs said.
"Labor understands that industry is critical to the future of this nation and we are committed to working with all affected stakeholders to maintain jobs and capabilities for steel manufacturing in Australia.
"We have a strong track record in working with the steel industry, including the implementation of the Steel Industry Plan in 1983 and the Steel Transformation Plan in 2011," the MPs said.
"Unlike the Abbott government, Labor is committed to working with industry to protect workers and maintain jobs."
