The 73-year-old active firefighter’s work has been recognised with an Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM).
“It’s just a way of serving the community,” Mr Bourke said of his Australia Day honour.
Since joining the brigade in 1974, Mr Bourke has been in many roles, including a nine-year stint as captain.
In 2003, after 24 years as an officer, he handed in his commission to better pursue his love of being a firefighter.
The Mount Kembla resident has also been involved in a high school cadet program.
“He continues to use his wealth of knowledge and experience to be a key mentor to the brigade,” his citation read.
Mr Bourke accepted the award to honour his family’s support.
