An Illawarra Greens member has described the greyhound ban as a win for animal welfare.

Cath Blakey lives at Bulli, home to one of the region’s greyhound tracks, but the proximity to the action means little to the 36-year-old.
“The Special Commission of Inquiry really showed that animal cruelty has been systemic in this industry and the industry’s had the opportunity to clean up,” she said.
Ms Blakey, who contested the seat of Cunningham at the federal election, said the one-year timeframe for the phase out was appropriate.
“It’s a really great step for animal welfare,” she said.
“But, obviously with the change in industry we need to see support to see all the people working in the industry get opportunities to retrain.”
