Here’s a recap of the severe weather warning that remains current for the Illawarra:
A trough of low pressure off the NSW coast is driving heavy rain across the region, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning of possible rainfall totals in excess of 100 millimetres in a 12-hour period overnight.
Twenty millimetres of rain was recorded in the 30 minutes to 9.30 pm at Albion Park and Foxground.
Rainfall totals between 9am and 11.30pm: Albion Park – 107.8mm, Bellambi – 26.6mm, Kiama – 85.6mm, Nowra – 12.6mm.
Heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding is possible over the Illawarra overnight, the bureau’s warning said.
“Twelve-hour totals of in excess of 100mm are likely in localised areas.”
The bureau says locations that may be affected include Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Bulli, Port Kembla, Albion Park, Kiama and Huskisson.
The State Emergency Service advises that people:
- Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
- If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
- For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
As of 11.45pm, Lake Entrance Road remains closed in both directions near College Avenue at Shellharbour due to flooding. Local diversions are in place.
At Albion Park Rail, flooding is still affecting traffic in all directions on the Illawarra Highway, near the Princes Highway.

11.15pm: The Shellharbour City SES unit is responding to a report of vehicle in water on Station Road at Albion Park Rail.
Earlier, a team from the same unit undertook a flood rescue on Tongarra Road, Albion Park after a vehicle became stuck in water.
11.05pm: The latest rainfall totals, since 9am, thanks to the Bureau of Meteorology.
- Albion Park – 100.6mm
- Bellambi – 26.6mm
- Kiama – 85.0mm
- Nowra – 10.0mm
11pm: Flooding is no longer affecting Shellharbour Road, near Woodlands Drive, at Barrack Heights.
10.45pm: A number of roads have been affected by the heavy rain drenching the Illawarra on Tuesday night.
- SHELLHARBOUR – Lake Entrance Road closed in both directions near College Avenue due to flooding. Local diversions are in place.
- ALBION PARK RAIL – Traffic affected in all directions on the Illawarra Highway near the Princes Highway due to flooding.
- BARRACK HEIGHTS – One of three northbound lanes on Shellharbour Road closed at Woodlands Drive due to flooding.

Currently, the heaviest rain is located on radar near Albion Park, Shellharbour and Port Kembla.
Locations which may be affected include Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Bulli, Port Kembla, Albion Park, Kiama and Huskisson.
