The acknowledgement was for the Wollongong business’s innovative use of PORTABOOM in traffic control operations. The move by D&D has resulted in significant safety benefits. Traffic controllers are able to operate PORTABOOM from a safe distance away from the direct line of traffic which has already resulted in a significant reduction of incidents compared with stop/slow methods.
PORTABOOM provides a physical barrier that motorists can't ignore. The system also reduces fatigue. One traffic controller can operate up to four PORTABOOM devices. And that is allowing traffic controllers to take more breaks, and move around for better concentration. It also reduces the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration and sunburn as traffic controllers can now stand in shaded safe zones.
Wireless remote control operation also allows traffic controllers to conduct more regular site audits.
Rather than being confined to one spot, traffic controllers can assist pedestrians, workers and residents. They can also walk beside the line of waiting motorists so that they can more effectively communicate with drivers reducing driver hostility.
D&D Group managing director Robert Cazzolli said the business had placed a great emphasis on creating new technologies to make traffic control operations safer.
With over four years in the making PORTABOOM has revolutionised traffic control and we're appreciative of the TMAA's recognition of our efforts. The input and commitment from all our Traffic Controllers has been a vital part in achieving this recognition and I thank them dearly. We dedicate this recognition to all of Australia's Traffic Controllers and their families who have been impacted by incidents at worksites and we commit to continuing our focus on creating innovations to make traffic control operations safer," he said.
“I would like to thank Traffic & Access Solutions for their continued support in assisting us in implementing the PORTABOOM system of work. I'd also like to thank my team of dedicated employees for their unwavering efforts.”
Traffic & Access Solutions general manager Steven Gilming congratulated D&D Traffic Management for the recognition.
“The courage it takes to challenge current conventions and make it safer and better is enviable. We encourage all traffic control organisation to adopt this new best practice," he said.
