A host of charities are participating in the sixth annual National Op Shop Week (August 27 to September 2).
The week aims to be a celebration of vintage fashion, op shop bargains, supporting charity and the environmental benefits of reducing, reusing and recycling.
Six Mission Australia Op Shops based in the Illawarra will celebrate by hosting store-wide sales and encouraging the community to venture into their local store to enjoy some retail therapy for the greater good.
Stores in Bellambi, Corrimal, Dapto, North Wollongong, Thirroul and Warilla are celebrating the week with a Winter Clearance Sale across all items.
For instance, Mission Australia’s Corrimal store is running a 50 per cent off sale during Op Shop Week.
Vinnies’ Fairy Meadow store is running a ten per cent off sale, concluding on Saturday.
The Smith Family’s Wollongong store is currently offering 20 per cent off winter wear, as well as half-price men’s and ladies’ shoes.
They will also have a store-wide half-price sale on Friday and Saturday.
“People have still been buying up winter clothing because we’ve had some cool days,” store manager Andrea Pearson said.
”But we’re starting to get the summer stuff out.”
Salvos Stores Illawarra regional manager Philip Wahba said they would be having departmental sales in every store, with discounts in each store throughout the week.
They also have a $2 rack featuring selected clothing.
“The response so far has been excellent,” Mr Wahba said.
Salvos Stores has launched an Op Shop Week campaign to spread awareness of the lifecycle of a donated product, and the importance of upcycling to help others in need and the environment.
Lifeline won’t be hosting a dedicated Op Shop Week sale, but instead will be offering all stock at half-price from September 7-9.
According to Mission Australia, there are five great reasons to go op shopping:
·It supports charity. Every dollar you spend goes directly to people in need and provides local jobs and volunteering opportunities.
·It’s a hipster haven. Love the thrill of the chase? Op shops are the perfect hunting ground for elusive fashion treasure. You’ll be surprised at the vintage beauties and designer brands that can be found.
·It offers variety. Whether you’re after clothes or home wares, there are always hidden gems to be found.
·It saves you money. If you’re a creative soul on a budget, op shopping is for you.
·It’s environmentally-friendly. By recycling your things, you are reducing landfill and CO2 emissions. None of your valuable donations go to waste. Any unwearable clothing is cut down and sold as cleaning rags.
