Parents and early morning staff discovered the bloodied remains of the chickens in a pen at the Bayswater Primary School today.
Assistant school principal Linton Roe said it was "disturbing" and especially distressing for the young students as the chickens wandered freely around the yard during the day and the youngsters had become attached to them.
"I can only think that whoever did this would have to be disturbed in some way," Mr Roe said.
Only two of the 12 chickens, which had been at the school for seven years as part of a science project, survived.
School council president Bronwyn Briant said they had not been killed quickly.
"I just cringe when I think that somebody in this area could do something like that," she said.
