Call to keep food fair
Community-based healthy food alliance Food Fairness Illawarra is using Fair Food Week to remind businesses to donate unwanted good food to local organisations supporting those in need.
By doing so at fairfoodweek.org.au/fair-food-week/ they can help reduce the $7.8 billion in uneaten food Australians sent to landfill each year.
Food waste makes up almost 40 per cent of the average garbage bin and produces greenhouse gas emissions and causes leaching when it goes to landfill.
There is also a growing number of people struggling to access enough healthy food.
In the Illawarra about 6.8 per cent of the population suffers from food insecurity.
Businesses can help through organisations like charity OzHarvest, which collects unwanted food from businesses.
