Councillor Steel leads a five-member team of Kiama Surf Club captain Sonja McMillan, Sea Bream Cafe owner Shane Douglas, Byrnes Run Neighbourhood Association chairman and Jamberoo resident Mick Souter and Gerringong automotive owner Bob Waite.
If elected, the team would fast-track the building of a second shopping centre and new parking in Kiama, negotiate a new service station, push for CCTV cameras in Kiama’s CBD and vote to continue free curbside clean-up services.
‘‘Especially in the past eight years, we haven’t had the numbers,’’ Cr Steel said.
‘‘Hopefully after the election, we’ll have the majority and be proactive and do things, not sit on the fence and wait. It’s been a good council, but it can do a lot more.’’
Cr Steel will serve his fifth term on the council if elected.
‘‘There’s a lot to do, as simple as that,’’ he said.
Ms McMillan, a lifetime Kiama resident, single mum and children’s dental health worker said she wanted to give something back to the area.
‘‘I want to look at another shopping centre so families won’t have to travel out of town,’’ she said.
Mr Douglas, also Kiama Junior Football Club’s president, said he wanted to boost tourism. A soccer event hosted in Kiama last year injected $450,000 into the area’s economy.
Mr Souter said he wanted to keep costs down.
Mr Waite said he wanted to see more jobs for young people.
Councillor nominations close at midday today.
