Lake Illawarra turned on ideal conditions for the final day of the Manly Junior national titles at Port Kembla Sailing Club on Monday.

Alumni of the four-day national regatta include Olympic medallists Malcolm Page, Nathan Wilmot and two-time America’s Cup-winning skipper James Spithill and Port Kembla’s Hugh Lewis said spectators got a glimpse of sailing’s future champions.

‘‘It was fantastic regatta,’’ Lewis said.

‘‘The strong southerly that affected the Sydney to Hobart came through on Sunday morning and that presented a lot of challenges for the kids but we saw some real standout little sailors.

‘‘The pair who won the opens from Manly on Shotgun, Zac Barnabas and Oscar Triglone are names to watch for the future.

‘‘Their quite young but they’re very skilled for their age.’’

Lewis said the 14 Port Kembla juniors competing in the event sailed well against the mite of Sydney clubs.

‘‘A number of the top kids you’re looking at tomorrow’s champions Australian reps and Olympic champions,’ he said.

‘‘For the majority of our kids it was their first ever nationals and we had a number of podium finishes across the four days.’’

Sisters Felicity and Isabelle Caralon led the charge aboard Quack finishing third overall in the novice class.

‘‘Erin Curry and Tynan Walsh got a fifth and Emmett Walsh and Riley Curry got a sixth in the opens against very tough competition so they’re tapping on the door of some of the really good Sydney guys,’ Lewis said.

‘‘Jacina Olivieri and Maddison Markey a second and a third in the novice and Crista Kelly and Alanah Lewis got a fifth.

‘‘Guys like Dylan Cardwell, Cormac Carolan, Elliot Winn, Michael Marzano Connor Weare and Bailey Sellers all built on every race and came on in leaps and bounds.’’
