Mr Jenkins, 35, a volunteer firefighter with the Gerringong Rural Fire Brigade, was one of 20 RFS volunteers from across the Illawarra to take part in the World's Greatest Shave event at Stockland Shellharbour on Saturday, to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
‘‘I last had a haircut 10 years ago and have had dreadlocks the last six years ... so there was a bit of dedication there,’’ Mr Jenkins said.
‘‘It was time for them to go.
‘‘I’d always stipulated I would lose them to raise money for charity.’’
The Illawarra volunteers - collectively known as ‘‘the Hot Heads’’ - had raised more than $4500 going into Saturday’s event and have now pushed that towards $7000.
On Sunday morning Mr Jenkins said the metre-long dreadlocks were sitting on his lounge room floor.
‘‘I’m still trying to figure out what to do with them,’’ he laughed.
