"It will be based around shapes taken from the escarpment and the Illawarra flame tree with a central figure representing the people of Wollongong," he said.
Numskull was commissioned to fill the space between Coco Cubano and Hype DC on the shopping centre's ground floor with his distinctive geometric style.
His aerosol-based murals have graced walls from New York to Paris and Hong Kong. His latest seven-storey work towers over the corner of Park and Pitt streets in Sydney.
The Sydney-based artist's work has been commissioned by councils and businesses ever since he found a way to turn a hobby into a career in 2003.
"Graffiti was a hobby when I was younger and I used to paint with my brother for fun but now I have a son and I have to support my family," he said.
The artist was involved in 2013's Wonder Walls festival in Wollongong and welcomed changing attitudes to street art.
Wollongong Central management has encouraged people to watch the mural come to life between 2pm and 5pm daily, between Sunday and Wednesday.
