Blaine Rozs, 19, was killed while stacking rolls of turf at the Turfco facility on the Princes Highway around 7am.

Workcover NSW confirmed it had already begun an investigation into the incident.

‘‘Preliminary enquiries indicate the worker and a colleague were using a tractor to stack rolls of turf,’’ a Workcover spokesperson said.

‘‘The 19-year-old received fatal crush injuries after being hit with the tractor’s attachment.’’

Colleagues attempted to assist Mr Rozs, but police confirmed he died at the scene.

Mr Rozs was a promising rugby league prop, having played for the Illawarra Steelers SG Ball team and also for the Dragons National Youth Competition side. 

He was not contracted for 2015, and was set to return to playing for his junior club, the Berry-Shoalhaven Heads Magpies.

The Dragons released a statement on Monday afternoon on behalf of the club and players.

‘‘The Dragons are deeply saddened to be informed of the passing of Blaine and our deepest sympathies go out to both his family and friends,” said Dragons NYC Head Coach Ben Hornby.

‘‘He was a promising young prop who had a passion for rugby league and was a highly regarded and respected player and teammate.

The club and the National Rugby League will offer assistance to members of the 2014 and 2015 youth squads.

Turfco employee Gavin Rogers told Fairfax Media Mr Rozs was a “much loved member of the community.”

“Blaine has been with us for about three years. We have lost a worker but the kids here have lost a buddy,” he said.

NSW Police said investigations by local police and WorkCover would continue, and a report would be prepared for the coroner.
